Generally speaking, all Energy Star rated geothermal heat pumps qualify for the federal tax credit as they are at least 45% more efficient than standard options. Water to water geothermal heat pumps are also now included in the tax credit list.

The actual amount of the 2012 tax credit for a geothermal heat pump is 30% of the installation cost of the system with no upper limit. This ensures a significant savings for any type of geothermal installation.
