Gas Furnaces

Whether you've been a dedicated gas consumer for years or you're just making the transition now, having a new gas furnace installed is a big step. These are large pieces of equipment and you don't want to spend a ton of money unless you know you're getting the right product installed the right way. With years of experience installing and maintaining gas furnaces for our Greater Cleveland, OH area customers, we at Apple Heating & Cooling have the knowledge and skills to get the job done right for you.

Gas furnaces are available that burn both natural gas and LP gas (propane). Gas furnaces have always been available in different heat outputs and configurations – Upflow, Downflow or Horizontal. But today’s gas furnaces are available with much higher energy efficiencies and features to provide more comfort.

With a single stage furnace, that means the fire is either on or off. When the thermostat calls for heat, the furnace comes on and the burner lights along with operation of the fan to distribute the heat through the duct system. Once the thermostat is satisfied the system shuts down.

With a two-stage furnace, the furnace operates at a lower flame level, running longer and providing more comfort, while going to hire fire automatically when needed in colder weather.

A modulating furnace takes this comfort enhancement to the ultimate level – with many stages of operation providing the greatest comfort.

AFUE Ratings for Furnaces

One thing you'll notice when you're comparing various types of furnaces is that they all come with what's called an AFUE rating. This number reflects the energy efficiency of that particular model, so it's important to take into account when you're making your selection.

The furnaces on the market today typically fall into one of two categories – 80% or 90% and higher. The 80% AFUE furnaces vent into a masonry chimney or factory built gas vent chimney. The 90% plus furnaces use plastic pipe and vent either sidewall like a dryer vent or sometimes through the roof. 90% plus furnaces are also known as condensing furnaces. This means they are so efficient that the water vapor that is part of the exhaust condenses to liquid water and a drain must be provided.

90% and higher AFUE furnaces are available with efficiencies as high as 98% AFUE. And furnaces with AFUE ratings of 95% or higher qualify for Federal Tax Credits of $150.

If you are using LP gas to heat your home it is almost always a good investment to spend more to get a furnace with 95% AFUE or higher. You will quickly recover the extra cost in fuel savings. With natural gas the payback with fuel savings will be longer but with the tax credit and other comfort enhancements a high efficiency natural gas furnace may be the best choice.

Gas Furnace Sizes

Most heating systems are over-sized. That means the furnace is much bigger than needed in even the coldest weather. Over-sizing wastes fuel, leads to equipment breakdowns and uncomfortable homeowners. Over sized systems don’t last as long either, requiring replacement before an expected service life has been met.

At Apple Heating & Cooling, our professional Comfort Consultants will meet with you to learn about your needs and the particulars of your home. We will perform a heat loss/heat gain calculation to determine the correct size heating system for your home. And we guarantee it in writing. Our Comfort Consultant will look at your existing system including duct sizes, electric power, and what is needed for a safe venting system. Only after we have designed a custom solution for you can we help you select the best option.

Gas Furnace Maintenance

From Ashtabula to Wickliffe, from Mentor to Madison, from Painesville to Highland Heights, one thing for sure – our heating systems operate approximately 6000 hours per year. To put this “run time” in perspective, a car driven for the same 6000 hours at 60 mile per hour would travel 360,000 miles. No one would consider such a journey without arranging for oil changes, lubrication and routine tune-ups along the way to assure the efficiency, safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Your home heating system serves you many more hours than your car, and, like your car, needs routine tune-ups to operate in an efficient, safe and reliable manner.

Our unique precision tune-up includes everything that needs to be done to your heating system each year to restore it to its very best condition. No other local heating and air conditioning company performs a comparable precision tune-up. In fact, it often takes us 1 ½ hours to perform the work! You will be impressed with our checklist, our technician’s proficiency and the thoroughness of our work.

If you want your furnace to keep running efficiently, regular maintenance is a must. That's why we offer comprehensive natural gas furnace maintenance services designed to keep your furnace in good working order for years to come. Even just having us come out to inspect your unit once a year and make any necessary tweaks can greatly improve the efficiency of your furnace and also serve to extend its life significantly.

Without taking the time to schedule regular maintenance, however, you can quickly wind up with a furnace that isn't functioning as well as it could and facing costly repairs. An inefficient furnace can wind up costing you significantly more in heating costs than necessary over time. Plus, regular maintenance will keep your furnace running longer, preventing you from having to purchase a new one.
