When considering your options for a new gas furnace, you will have some choices to make. First – you will need to choose between the 80% AFUE models and the 90+ AFUE models. The 90+ efficiency units will use less gas to do heat your home and are more costly to put in. If you plan to stay in the home for more than 5 years the 90+ is usually a good investment. Second – you will be able to choose a fixed capacity unit or one with dual capacity. The dual capacity costs only a little more than fixed capacity and provides more comfort. It has the ability to operate at low-fire, quietly delivering comfortable air to the home during much of the heating season. And when the temperature drops to really cold temperatures, it automatically kicks into high fire, providing all the heat you will need. Dual capacity units offer increased comfort and quiet operation for not a lot of money. Dual capacity units are available in both 80% and 90+% efficiencies. Third – you will also be able to choose a furnace with a variable speed blower. These units use a proven technology that allows the indoor blower to vary it’s output automatically. For heating applications it means quiet operation and even heat delivery. But it is when variable speed unit are used for cooling that they really shine. A variable speed unit will allow you to select enhanced humidity removal – maximizing your comfort and your energy savings. Variable speed units are available in both 80% and 90+% efficiencies. It is important to realize that furnace efficiency ratings – AFUE – are measured in a laboratory under controlled conditions. When a new furnace is installed in your home the system efficiency will be affected by the ductwork and the thermal envelope of the home. A furnace that is rated to be high-efficiency in the lab will not deliver the promised fuel savings if installed with a poor duct system and a poorly performing thermal envelope.
