Heat Pumps

At Apple Heating we like Heat Pumps. Both of the owners and the Service Manager have heat pumps to heat and cool their homes. Why did they choose the Heat Pump over all the other choices? Operating cost, comfort, and reliability.

Heat Pumps are a lot like ordinary central air conditioning. They both use a compressor, an indoor coil, an outdoor coil and fans to move air across the coils to transfer heat energy. A Heat Pump looks and acts just like an ordinary air conditioner in the cooling season. Then in the heating season it does some magic. By using a reversing valve and some controls, the same unit that was used to remove heat from our homes and reject it into the outside air, now removes heat from the outside air and rejects it into the inside (house) air. Wow, what a concept.

How can heat be extracted from cold air? Well it’s really simple. By using the refrigerant system to make the refrigerant much colder than the air, it will absorb heat from the air as it is forced across it by a fan. Think of it this way – if the refrigerant is down to 5°F and the air that is blown across the coil holding the cold refrigerant is 20°F, the refrigerant will absorb some heat and warm up – maybe to 10°F. The compressor then concentrates the heat and it can be used to heat the home. That is how we can get heat from “cold” air.

What about the stories I’ve heard about Heat Pumps? Well many of the horror stories about heat pumps are true! Some early units were prone to compressor failures and frequent breakdowns. But today’s heat pumps are reliable. We offer a 10 year parts and labor warranty with our best units. We would not be able to do that unless the units were reliable.

What about the stories I’ve heard about Heat Pumps blowing cold air and costing a fortune to operate? These problems are preventable, but unfortunately have happened to too many homeowners. The problems in this case are not caused by the equipment or the technology but by faulty installations. When duct systems and thermal envelopes leak, operating costs will skyrocket. And when duct systems are poorly designed and installed, the air from a Heat Pump will feel drafty and cool. Apple Heating can guarantee that these problems will not happen to you. We can measure the integrity of the thermal envelope and advise you if corrective measures are called for. We can measure the performance of your duct system and advise if improvements are needed there as well.

I’ve heard that Heat Pumps don’t work North of the Mason-Dixon Line. This is simply not true. Some feel that because Heat Pumps rely on supplemental heat sources (electricity, gas or oil) in colder weather that they “don’t work”. The truth is that they do work and they provide most of the heat needed at a much lower cost than the alternatives. Even when you add in the cost of the supplemental heat source, the annual cost of heating is lower with a heat pump. At Apple Heating we have hundreds of happy Heat Pump owners here in Northeast Ohio. We can give you references – just ask!

We offer 2 brands of Heat Pump units – Trane and our own Apple brand. Both are built to offer years of dependable service.

All contractors are not the same. We can help you choose a quality contractor. And we know a lot about heating and cooling systems that don’t deliver the performance they should – systems that don’t provide comfort – systems that cost too much to operate. We’ve learned that when a system doesn’t perform, it is almost always due to a poor installation. That’s right, it’s not who made the equipment – almost all equipment today is well made – it’s who puts it in. A poor duct system can ruin the system comfort and efficiency.

If you want the utmost in comfort and efficiency, we suggest a dual capacity heat pump combined with a variable speed indoor unit. A dual capacity heat pump can operate at two different capacities. During the cooling season it uses low capacity for most weather and kicking into high capacity when needed.  During the winter it operates in much the same way. One big advantage with dual capacity heat pumps is they can be sized much bigger than needed for cooling. This allows the compressor to provide more heat, relying less on the supplemental heat, lowering operating costs. But for cooling, humidity removal is still achieved, operating most of the time at the lower capacity.
