RISING COSTS FOR HOME HEATING FUEL CAN BE A REAL PROBLEM
Not only have we seen astronomical increases in the cost of gasoline, but now we are seeing huge increases in the cost of home heating fuel. No one can afford not to do everything possible to save heating energy. Here are some ways you can save:
Insulation. If you have less than 3 ½ “ of insulation in your walls, and less than 8” in your attic consider adding some more.
Windows. Fix broken window glass. Add a storm pane if none exists, even if it is applied on the inside. Your hardware store has kits for this purpose. If your windows are old and leak a lot of air, consider replacement.
Caulk & seal. Seal leaks in your home’s exterior with caulk or other means. Pay particular attention to penetrations of pipes and wires. Don’t forget the basement – if you can see light through a crack, seal it.
Equipment maintenance. Have your furnace, boiler or heat pump tuned-up by a professional. A neglected unit can easily waste 10% or more of your fuel.
Call us at Apple Heating & Cooling to schedule your maintenance if you have not already done so.
Equipment replacement. Depending on the efficiency and age of your unit, it may make sense to consider replacement. Home heating units last an average of 15 to 20 years before needing replacement. But in times of rising energy costs, sometimes it is best to replace a unit that is still operating fine, but is not energy efficient.
Our Comfort Consultant can give you a free evaluation of your equipment efficiency – and how much a new unit will save.
Dual-Fuel. Another way to save significantly on home heating costs is with a dual –fuel system. This combines a high efficiency heat pump with a gas, oil or propane furnace. The savings are astounding. For some of our customers the savings on heating fuel is in excess of $1000 per year. If you do not have air conditioning or your air conditioner has seen better days this might be a very attractive option for you.

And the savings are real : 5-15% depending on your home and your settings.
