Carbon Monoxide Protection

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, toxic gas. Unfortunately people become sick or die from carbon monoxide poisoning every year. Carbon monoxide or CO results from incompletely burned fuel. Sources can include any combustion appliance like a furnace, water heater, range or oven. Another common source of CO in the home is from automobile exhaust.

Protecting your family

There are two things you can do to protect your family from CO poisoning. First and most important invest in a quality Low-Level CO detector. A low level CO detector will alarm at levels as low as 10 parts per million. An inexpensive CO detector, while better than no detector will not provide the same level of protection. Many will not alarm unless there is 70 parts per million for 2 hours. The two best low level CO detectors are the NSI 3000 and the CO Experts low level detector.

The other important thing to do is have your combustion appliance serviced and checked by a professional annually. What should I do if my CO detector alarms?

If your CO detector alarms you should check to see what the level is if your model displays in PPM. If the level is between 10 PPM and 99 PPM you should call a professional to investigate. If the level is above 99 PPM you should get all people and pets out of the house and call the fire department.
