Duct Rehabilitation
Poor duct system design and installation are the rule, not the exception in the Cleveland OH area. Proper duct design is not a mystery. Nor is proper duct installation. Unfortunately most of the residential duct systems are not designed or installed as they should be. We see the effects of poor duct systems every day. Poor duct systems contribute to a number of problems including lack of comfort, equipment failure, noisy operation and excessive fuel consumption.
The Importance of Ductwork
Your home comfort system forces temperature controlled air through the ducts in your home to keep all areas of your house equally comfortable. As long as these ducts are well balanced, designed and installed, you will get the full benefit of all of the energy that goes into generating that temperature controlled air.
At Apple Heating & Cooling we design ducts using ACCA Manual D for duct design. All of our ductwork is sealed against leaks using duct mastic designed to last the life of the building.
Problems with bad ducts
The biggest problem we see with duct systems is they are too restrictive of airflow. The duct system in your home is like your arteries and veins in your body. The blower in your furnace is like your heart. When the ducts are too restrictive, the system pressure is too high and leads to system failure.
How much pressure is too high? Gas furnaces are designed by the manufacturer to be installed so that the duct system and other external components together do not create pressures exceeding .5 “of water column. Inches of water column is a pressure measurement for small pressures like those in duct systems.
At Apple we measure duct pressures every day. We find many systems with pressures that exceed 1.0” of pressure. The excess pressure leads to these problems:
Excess pressure leads to low airflow. Low airflow can cause compressor failures in air conditioners and heat pumps. Low air flow can cause failure of heat exchangers in furnaces. Low airflow can lead to poor comfort in the home, excessively noisy operation and high fuel bills.
We can fix bad ducts
If you are experiencing equipment failure, high fuel bills, poor comfort or noisy operation we can help. Our experienced staff has the tools and experience to measure the pressure in your existing system and recommend repairs.
